National Arboretum: Natural Dyeing with Kitchen Compost

From indigo, to avocados, to onion skins — nature can yield a wide range of beautiful, colorful dyes. Using locally sourced plants, kitchen compost, and other plant based materials, you will have the opportunity to experiment with various hues and learn about the ways to prepare fabric for dyeing. With a focus on three primary colors, you will be able to accomplish a full spectrum of color during this session. A brief history of the practice of natural dyeing as well as the origins of some materials and colors will be discussed. The science behind the process, mordants, and modifiers will also be covered. Each participant will take home two bandana sized pieces, dyed in the colors of your choice.
